Wilderness Camp locations for prime fishing on a budget

You have checked out our lodge and you are  convinced that we can deliver a first class Orvis Endorsed Expedition that suits your expectations. The only question now is, WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COME AND FISH?”  Generally we get four types of people asking this important question.  Knowing which one of the below categories you fit into is very important when deciding when to come fly fish Alaska.  Are you one of these people, or do you fall into another mold?

1.) The First Timer:  This person has never been to Alaska fly fishing and wants to experience fly fishing for  trout, salmon, char, bear viewing, and maybe even a casting clinic.  Being that anglers during June can only catch huge Rainbow Trout and other resident species, most first timers that are not true trout fishing purists come during late July, Aug, or early Sept.  We do see some spring bears chasing moose calves around in June but the highest concentration of brown bears on the river happens when the Sockeye Salmon show up early July.  See weeks below for more explanation of our fishing schedule.

2.) The Salmon Angler: This type of angler could care less about catching rainbow trout and wants to focus on Salmon.  Most of the time this person wants to fish for a specific species of Salmon, and therefore deciding when to come is VERY important.  Steer clear of June and go right for July, Aug, or Sept.  See the weeks below to target your favorite species or give us a call now to talk to a real fishing guide not some booking agency.

3.) Trout Bum: This person is not  interested in catching salmon and wants to come to the best place to fly fish for Trout, Grayling, and Char.  This person spends his spare time in the winters tying flies and day dreaming about the next great trout destination.  Most of the time this type of person want to fly fish for Rainbows without having to drift salmon egg patterns.  This person probably would rather raise a rainbow to the surface with a caddis or mouse pattern and loves swinging huge articulated leaches to big hungry rainbows.  In this case we suggest that they come week 1,2, 3.

4.) Grand Slam Angler:  This person wants Trout, Salmon, or any other and all species that they can catch.  August is a great time to fish for Salmon as well as trout.  Check out weeks 9-13. If you think you would enjoy drifting egg and flesh patterns to a large population of rainbows and a mixed bag of Salmon then August is a great month for this.  We also find some anglers that want to come and catch Rainbows every day but maybe sneak away and pull on some Silver Salmon.  This angler would want to focus on the fall season when the Silver Salmon run happens.  Check out the weeks below for more information.
